The Mnemosyne Atlas is presented as an open apparatus for producing relations that are neither predetermined by chronology nor contained within a fixed taxonomy. Warburg’s procedure relocates, crops, enlarges and recombines images on black working surfaces, photographs provisional arrangements, and then reopens them to further modification. The decisive distinction is between atlas and catalogue: the catalogue delimits a universe according to prior criteria, whereas the atlas remains necessarily incomplete, extensible and non-sequential. Its iconic operation is montage, where heterogeneous images generate knowledge through collision, adjacency and migration. The article stresses that the Atlas was not a graphic summary of Warburg’s thought but its operative essence: a machine for activating ideas and relationships. The wider bridge is to archival studies, visual epistemology and non-linear interfaces, where meaning is produced through placement, comparison and repeated reconfiguration rather than delivered through a single ordered narrative.
