Victims turns architecture into an instruction set, mnemonic apparatus and participatory urban narrative. Hejduk responds to a Berlin site marked by the memory of torture not with a conventional memorial object but with a “masque” whose structures, characters, rules and temporal procedures are given to citizens as pieces of a game. The site becomes a board; the inhabitants receive rules for preparing it; the architectural figures can be selected and installed; diaries and textual annotations enlarge the project beyond the plan. Its theoretical contribution is the displacement of monumentality from fixed form to enacted memory. Architecture becomes capable of tracing erasures and reconstructing what collective amnesia has concealed. Methodologically, naming, drawing, instruction, narrative and participation operate together as a memory system. The wider bridge is to performative memorial practice, archival urbanism and civic epistemology, where architecture does not merely represent history but organises the procedures through which history can be encountered again.
