Before anything can circulate as knowledge it must become admissible, classifiable, retrievable and transmissible. Formats, metadata, evidence regimes, interfaces and technical protocols function as epistemic gates: they determine whether a trace can move from observation to archive, from archive to argument, and from argument to public consequence. What fails to arrive in the recognised form may remain effectively unseen regardless of its significance. SyntheticLegibility names the deliberate construction of passages through which heterogeneous materials—text, image, sound, gesture, spatial record, testimony, sensor data—can become mutually addressable without being forced into false equivalence. Legibility here is neither simplification nor standardisation for its own sake. It is an infrastructural achievement that preserves difference while enabling relation. A robust system must permit both human interpretation and computational retrieval, while keeping visible the transformations imposed by classification. Knowledge becomes operative when it can cross systems without losing the conditions of its production. Synthetic legibility therefore turns formatting into epistemology: the architecture of recognition becomes part of what knowledge is.
