An archive was once imagined as a record of the past; it is more accurate, and more useful, to treat it as a set of conditions on the future. What an archive keeps determines what can later be cited, contested or rediscovered — and what it discards, deprioritises or fails to index effectively disappears from the range of things a future argument can draw on. This is not a passive process. Retrieval systems, search rankings and preservation budgets actively decide, every day, what remains reachable. VectorAfterlife names the second life a record acquires once it exists primarily as a retrievable vector rather than a physical object with a fixed location — a life governed less by paper decay than by embedding drift, index rebuilds and the priorities of whoever maintains the system. An archive's power was never simply about the past it holds; it has always been about the future arguments it makes possible or forecloses, and that logic has only intensified.
